What is Remy Hair?

The term Remy (or Remi) refers to 100% human hair and it is the best quality available for hair extensions. Although this term has been overused in recent years, true Remi hair has been held together from the time it is originally collected, ensuring that the cuticle is aligned in one direction. This is an important distinction because, if the cuticles are not aligned and running in the same direction, the extensions are considered non-Remi, an inferior product. In addition, non-Remi strands are processed in an acid bath to strip away the cuticle leaving the hair more fragile and damaged. The strands may initially appear smooth and shiny to the naked eye but after washing it will be more likely to matt and tangle. If non-Remi strands are used in a permanent strand application like hot fusion the result would be cuticles that rub together creating hair extensions that tangle and frizz.

Remy’s hair is the highest grade of real, natural human hair that can be purchased for use in wigs or hair extensions. Human hair produces the best, longest lasting wigs and extensions. It is considered to be the top of the line in human hair because the cuticles are kept intact. Maintaining the hairs’ cuticles and aligning them in a unidirectional fashion for weaving to create a wig or extension creates a hair piece that is completely natural in appearance.

What exactly is Remy hair extension?

Remy Hair Extensions is probably the most misunderstood and overused phrase in the hair industry.

Some common MYTHS about Remy human hair are:

  • Remy’s hair is only Indian hair.
  • Remy’s hair is an ultra-rare blend of fine/thin hair.
  • Remy’s hair costs thousands of dollars.
  • Remy’s hair is only available from fine salons.

For those considering buying Remy hair extensions for the first time, below is a list of considerations before purchasing your Remy’s hair.

Know your Remy qualities

It takes care and practice to tell one true Remy extension product from a ‘human-hair’ product masquerading as Remy extensions. But with a little practice and a few guidelines, you will be able to avoid falling foul of charlatan distributors.

Firstly, Remy’s hair is very soft to the touch, it feels fluid and runs through your fingers like water. It has a high luster and shine but does not look waxy (a typical telltale sign of synthetic hair).

Secondly, Remy’s hair falls into 2 main categories: Virgin (non-colored and non-processed) Remy and Non-Virgin (colored and/or processed) Remy’s hair.

Virgin Remy Extensions

Depending on the donor of the hair, Virgin Remy extensions can be straight, wavy or curly. Virgin Remy hair extensions are now supplied from all over the world including Europe, China, Malaysia, and Brazil but the vast majority of Virgin Remy hair is sourced from India. Depending on where the hair is sourced you will find that the hair has differing characteristics due to ethnic differences in each region.

Non-Virgin Remy Extensions

Non-Virgin Remy Hair can be either simply colored or it can also be processed to include an array of different wavy or curly textures including the Yaki texture, Body Wave texture, Deep Wave texture etc.

Pro Cute Remy Hair Extensions

Pro Cute Remy hair extensions still have their cuticle intact. An intact cuticle will have an appearance that is less shiny, but many consider to look more natural. Cuticle hair extensions have a more realistic texture than standard sets. However, it is still quite luxurious to touch, but in such a way that it will seamlessly blend with your own hairstyle. Cuticle hair blends beautifully with your natural hair.

Choosing your application method

clip-ins, sew in wefts or pre-bonded tips

Your application method will be dependent upon your lifestyle and styling requirements. If, for example, you are simply looking for temporary styling solutions that provide additional length, thickness or a flash of color and your hair is already more than 5″ long then simple clip-in hair could be the solution. If, however, you are seeking a more permanent solution that can be kept for a number of months then a sewn-in weft or pre-bonded tips may be the better option.

Caring for your Remy extensions and replacing them

Your Remy extensions will need to be taken care of in order to maintain their good looks. Caring for your Remy extensions should include, gentle combing or brush on a daily basis, wrapping or plating, washing, and conditioning. The use of heated appliances should be undertaken with care and you used only occasionally.

Remy hair extensions have become popular because of the exceptional looks and styles that can be obtained and the longevity of the product. While being somewhat more expensive than other human hair products and substantially more expensive than synthetic products, if maintained Remy hair extensions will last substantially longer than other extensions and offer a cost-effective hair solution and wise beauty investment.
